This study examined how students' preferences for frequent and transparent grading feedback influence their perceptions of professor effectiveness and their willingness to engage. Through a focus group of students from diverse academic backgrounds, we uncovered key themes: students value effort-based grading, feel discouraged by rigid grading systems, and view transparent practices as a reflection of a professor's dedication. Using theories like procedural justice and cognitive dissonance, our findings highlight the relational impact of grading on trust, motivation, and communication. This research emphasizes the need for adaptable and inclusive grading practices to foster positive student-faculty relationships and improve educational outcomes.

In December 2023, a group of seven students and I organized a White Out basketball game to support and celebrate women in sports as part of a Foundations of Civic and Community Engagement group project. Our primary goal was to ignite excitement among Behrend students about supporting women’s athletics on campus.
To lay the groundwork, we conducted research on student attendance at Behrend’s athletic events and gathered insights through surveys with student-athletes. We presented our findings and plans during an in-class presentation to raise awareness about the importance of supporting women’s teams.
The event itself was a major success, with the first 100 students through the doors receiving White Out t-shirts to wear during the game, creating an electrifying atmosphere of unity and school spirit. During halftime, I had the honor of speaking about the importance of showing up for our incredible women’s teams and fostering a culture of support and enthusiasm for women’s athletics.
